Sneak and Sneaker: An Historical Investigation

The question of antique sneakers has recently arisen. I should like to enter into evidence the above photograph, taken ca. 1960. Take particular note of the footwear sported by the sneaky-looking lad on the right. These are Serious Mutterpluckin Sneakers by any standard. And only the tops are showing. Perhaps more complete views of this ancient shoe will surface as anthropological digs in strange ruins continue apace. For the moment, the rest must be shrouded in idle speculation and misty conjecture.

The photograph appears courtesy of David, more and more of whose photographs will appear here as I have less and less to say.

The question itself comes courtesy of DarkoV, who does not live in Iceland.
